Bitcointalk's Origin
To Factor In, Information found on external sources, such as wikis or other online platforms, may vary in accuracy. Our information comes directly from the forum's source and its administrator, theymos, who collaborated with Satoshi Nakamoto.
On November 22, 2009, A person with the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto began using SourceForge's mailing lists to create a communication link between Bitcoin developers and users.
These mailing lists functioned more like email-based discussion threads than a traditional online forum. Still, according to theymos, Satoshi could've used Sourceforge's forum feature to create a temporary forum for a short period, which was later deleted (However, this occurred before theymos's tenure, so it may be inaccurate).
After utilizing SourceForge's mailing lists, Satoshi and Sirius created the forum at bitcoin.org/smf, which later moved to forum.bitcoin.org around May 2011. Then, Satoshi and Sirius (Martti Malmi) created the standalone forum Bitcointalk.org in June 2011.
While additional contributors may have been involved in its development, these are the only ones publicly known.
It’s worth noting that Satoshi actively served as an administrator during this period, managing spam and implementing minor software tweaks (some of which are still in the code today). Then, in late 2010, Satoshi left.
The forum required staff support, so various individuals were appointed.
The forum's admin, theymos stated that he was initially assigned the moderator role out of necessity and was subsequently appointed an admin and managed the forum along with Sirius. In January 2012, theymos became head admin after Sirius left the forum.
Later on, theymos and Cøbra managed the domains Bitcointalk.org and Bitcoin.org (both created by Satoshi). Cøbra maintained limited involvement in the forum's operations and eventually departed from the project. Cøbra now serves as the administrator of Bitcoin.org.
theymos mentioned: A few people were worried that the forum was too chaotic to be on Bitcoin.org itself, so they convinced Sirius to split it off from Bitcoin.org. Jeff Garzik was one of the main people trying to convince Sirius to make this split, and it was him who registered the Bitcointalk.org domain. This renaming happened in August 2011.
Presently, The forum is overseen by 2 Administrators (theymos, and Cyrus), 3 Global moderators (mprep, hilariousandco, and Mr. Big) and 19 Staff members.
